Does Artificial Grass Look Real? How to Get a Natural-Looking Lawn

By Nando and the Synthetic Grass Techs team · Updated · 3 min read

Older artificial grass looked like carpet: one flat shade of green, shiny in the sun, with seams you could see from the street. Today’s turf can fool your neighbors, but not every product does, and not every install. Here’s what makes the difference.

Yes, good artificial grass looks like a freshly cut lawn, all year. The look comes from the product (blade color, shape and thatch) and just as much from the install: hidden seams, clean edges and a smooth base.

What makes turf look real

  • More than one shade of green. Real lawns mix greens, and the best turf blends two or more blade colors.
  • Thatch. A layer of short, curly tan or brown fibers at the base of the blades mimics the dead grass in a real lawn and helps the blades stand up.
  • Blade shape. Shaped blades catch light like real grass instead of shining like plastic.
  • The right height for the space. A front lawn, a dog run and a putting green each look best at different pile heights.

Why installation matters as much as the product

  • Seams. Turf has a grain, like carpet. Every piece has to run the same direction, or the seams show as color stripes.
  • Edges. Clean, secured edges along walks, planters and pavers make turf read as a lawn instead of a rug.
  • A smooth base. Bumps and dips in the base show through. We finish every base with a decomposed granite (DG) topping so the turf lies flat.
  • Infill, brushed in. Infill holds the blades upright. Every lawn we install gets acrylic-coated sand.

  1. Round acrylic-coated sandThe top dressing. Rounded grains coated in acrylic reflect heat and help the blades stand up.
  2. Base infill sand + antimicrobial pet infill optionalInfill sand settles between the blades for weight and support. In pet areas we mix in antimicrobial pet infill.
  3. Synthetic grassTurf cut, seamed and fitted to your yard, secured at the edges with perimeter tacking and 6-inch perimeter spikes.
  4. Decomposed granite (DG) toppingA fine finish layer that gives the turf a smooth, even bed.
  5. Class II road base or aggregateThe structural base the whole installation sits on.
  6. Woven geo fabricSeparates the base from the soil underneath.
  7. Pest control wire mesh optionalKeeps gophers and other burrowing pests out.
  8. SubgradeThe native ground under the installation.

Where artificial grass works best

  • Front and back yard lawns
  • Pet areas and dog runs (artificial grass for dogs)
  • Play areas and playgrounds (is artificial grass safe for kids)
  • Putting greens
  • Side yards and strips along driveways
  • Between pavers and stepping stones
  • HOA common areas and commercial landscapes
  • Patios, creative projects and indoor spaces

Some of the best-looking yards mix turf with river rock, planters and pavers instead of covering everything in one green sheet.

Questions about how turf looks

Will artificial grass look fake from the street?

Not with a quality product installed well. Multi-tone blades with thatch, seams that all run the same direction and clean edges are what make it read as a real lawn.

Does artificial grass fade in the sun?

Quality turf is made for full sun, and ours carries a 16-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Does it stay green in winter?

Yes. No dormant brown lawn in winter and no dry patches in summer.

How much does a natural-looking lawn cost?

Most of our installations land between $8 and $12 per square foot, installed, depending on the turf you choose and the prep. See what artificial grass costs.
