Artificial Grass Water Savings in Southern California: What You’ll Save

By Nando and the Synthetic Grass Techs team · Updated · 3 min read

Water is the reason many Southern California homeowners first look at artificial grass. A natural lawn needs water through every long, dry summer, and in the Inland Empire that adds up fast. Here’s what you actually save, the catch with rebates, and what the new state rules mean for HOAs and businesses.

A Southern California lawn uses roughly 42 gallons of water per square foot a year. Artificial grass needs none for irrigation, just an occasional rinse. One catch: the regional turf replacement rebate doesn’t cover synthetic turf.

How much water does a lawn use?

According to the Metropolitan Water District, each square foot of grass replaced in Southern California conserves about 42 gallons of water a year (Mono Lake Committee). Inland yards, with hotter summers, can use even more.

Lawn sizeWater a year, about
250 sq ft side yard or dog run10,500 gallons
500 sq ft front lawn21,000 gallons
1,000 sq ft backyard42,000 gallons
1,500 sq ft yard63,000 gallons
Based on about 42 gallons per square foot per year.

Artificial grass needs no irrigation. A quick rinse now and then, more often in pet areas, uses a small fraction of that.

The rebate catch

You may have heard about turf replacement rebates. The regional SoCal Water$mart program pays for replacing grass with water-wise plants, but it states plainly: “Synthetic turf is not allowed in a Turf Replacement Program project” (SoCal Water$mart). If a rebate is your top priority, a planted landscape is the way to get it. Many of our customers do both: turf where they live and play, and planters or rock where they don’t.

New rules for HOAs and businesses

California’s AB 1572 bans using drinking water to irrigate nonfunctional turf, the decorative grass in strips, medians and entries that nobody uses. It starts January 1, 2028 for commercial, industrial and institutional properties, and January 1, 2029 for HOA common areas. It doesn’t apply to single-family homes (East Valley Water District). For many of those areas, artificial grass is a clean, green way to comply. We install for HOAs and commercial properties across the Inland Empire.

Beyond water: what else you stop paying for

  • No irrigation system for the lawn. Fewer PVC pipes and sprinkler parts to repair or replace over the years.
  • No fertilizer or pesticides. Nothing washes off your lawn into storm drains.
  • No mowing. No mower, gas or weekend lost to yard work.

Greener in other ways

Synthetic grass can be recycled and reused. And for the greenest option, we’re adding SGT Pro 131 to our top tier, made with an organic backing derived from soybeans.

Questions about water and turf

Do I need to water artificial grass?

Not to keep it alive. Rinse it every week or two to clear dust and pollen, more often where pets go. Our maintenance guide has the routine.

What happens to my sprinklers?

Sprinklers that only water the lawn can be capped, and the zones that feed planters can stay. We sort that out during prep.

Will turf pay for itself?

It depends on your water rates and lawn size. Use the table above to estimate the water, then add mowing and lawn care. For the installed price, see what artificial grass costs.
